JCOM 2160: Reading Assignment #3

I found the comic strip quite funny. People are so cautious about stalkers/creepers having the ability to access personal information about them on the internet when really the vast majority just simplify that process for anyone that would be searching and post all of the details of their life on their Facebook profile. I have found that my skepticism about the whole online profile was quickly depleted after I saw just how many of my friends were on Facebook. (I thought if Chelsea, Ashley, Zach, etc. are all putting themselves out there then it must be ok.) With the way technology is expanding so rapidly it is essential to have the technological capabilities including a presence on the World Wide Web. Social networking has provided a fast and simple way for employers to seek potential employees with a click of the mouse. In turn, it has also simplified the process of getting noticed in the corporate world for those seeking employment.
I do agree with Debra Bruno (the mother in the article) and the point she made that Facebook has certainly changed the way we connect with people. It has caused us to become less personal. I truly hate when I know who someone is just because we are Facebook friends- not because we took the same psychology class or because they helped me with a flat tire but because they searched on “Mike’s” list of friends and added me. It then in turn becomes awkward when you vaguely remember their face from the “friend confirmation” but you can’t put your finger on how or where you know them from, because in reality you don’t know them. Facebook profiles allow others to learn all about you in a very impersonal way. It is interesting because I have found myself reading profiles of acquaintances and afterwards subconsciously deciding if I wanted to strive to become better friends with them based off of their interests, political views, hometown, etc. I am not judgmental but I think that everyone does this without even realizing it. I have found that there are people who are constantly posting their life through pictures which in turn makes them seem to be fun and adventurous therefore, making others want to be involved with their adventures. I have found it so amazing that such a wide variety of people join the Facebook bandwagon. I have sat in the computer labs on campus for hours at a time while the person next to me spends that whole time staring at their friend’s wedding pictures.
I do have a wishy-washy opinion of Facebook because I realize some of these silly, time-wasting things, but then for some reason I continue to keep my Facebook profile active. There are both positive and negative aspects to Facebook.

JCOM 2160: Reading Assignment #2

The article on network neutrality was news to me. I hadn’t yet heard anything about the possibility of service providers gaining the ability to charge search engines and other online sources to use their services. Although I think it will hinder technological advances and people’s freedom, I can understand where the service providers are coming from. For example, Google, Yahoo, Vonage, etc. have all developed into multi-billion dollar companies on an “unfettered Internet”. However, Alan Davidson made a point by saying, “If carriers are able to control what consumers do on the Internet, that threatens the model of Internet communications that has been wildly successful." (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/21/AR2006012100094_pf.html) American citizens have also come to view the Internet as an open network where they have rights paralleling that of freedom of speech. Google’s Alan Davidson said that his biggest worry is not about having to pay service providers but, that these fees may prohibit any bright, new innovative ideas from becoming reality. Through reading an article on cnet.com I was also informed that Google keeps a record of every item anyone ever searches via their engine. I don’t have a problem with anyone knowing what I have searched on Google but it does seem unlawfully invasive. However, even though I don’t like the idea of some unknown person having the ability to track my searches I do see the perspective of the Justice Department. I am not opposed to this if it could help law officials find evidence in civil and criminal cases as it aided in the conviction of a North Carolina man when he searched the words- “neck, snap, break, hold”. Having access to Google’s search record provided supporting evidence that led to his conviction in a murder case. My biggest concern is that this could lead to a higher level of invasion- email surveillance, bank tracking, etc.

Email Etiquette

I think most everyone could benefit from a lesson on email etiquette. I certainly needed some of the tips that were pointed out on the site, www.emailreplies.com. I liked the tips on this site although they were quite brief on many of them and feel that most people would gain a lot more from a detailed explanation of the tips. For example, I liked the detail incorporated in the “Core Rules” on the site, www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html. Any corporation dealing with customers or business relations via email on a regular basis should certainly enforce an email policy. Having proper email etiquette can give individuals and corporations that extra edge to get ahead of the “crowd”. We live in a generation where people have become so lazy in respecting grammatical rules because of the ease of incorporating acronyms in their text messages and emails it would be beneficial to teach these “netiquette” skills at an early age in middle schools and high schools.

Final Proposal Letter

Lee’s Marketplace
555 East 1400 North
Logan, UT 84341

Dear Jared McDonald:

The Utah State University Sexual Assault and Anti-Violent Information (SAAVI) organization, proposes an opportunity to create a relationship with Lee’s Marketplace in assisting SAAVI to meet the needs and goals of troubled victims. We would like to hold a new event in the Logan Lee’s Marketplace in order to raise awareness and funds.

Your sponsorship will help students in need and bring recognition to Lee’s Marketplace as well as to the SAAVI program. The purpose of the USU SAAVI Office is to help create violence-free environments and healthy relationships at USU, and with your help we can better meet these goals.

We come to you for support because many students at USU shop at Lee’s and have a trust in your services. We would like to get USU students involved along with other community members. Your partnership will build and maintain relationships with the community and the SAAVI program.

While USU students are currently involved in the SAAVI program, we want to engage the rest of the community. One in four women are affected by sexual assault. By sponsoring this event not only will it help SAAVI achieve its goal, it will assist Lee’s Marketplace in maintaining community involvement. We feel your slogan, "You've Got a Friend at Lee's" meets the standard for our mission.

SAAVI has a history of uniting communities through a shared goal of preventing sexual violence and promoting healthy relationships. Through the assistance of the project director, Rachel Brighton, SAAVI and Lee’s Marketplace can successfully raise the funds needed to fully obtain its goals.

We would like to hold the new “Shop a Mile” event at Lee’s Marketplace. During the last week of January 50 percent of purchases made by any customer shopping in high heels will be donated to the SAAVI program.

We appreciate the support Lee’s Marketplace has given to the community and we look forward to an ongoing partnership.

Sincerely,

Amy Jensen

Draft Position Paper

Currently Burger Planet is losing the demographic of women between the ages 30 to 40. Women in this category are becoming more health conscious. We propose that BP develop new options for our menu. In order to be thorough Jayne Petersen, fitness specialist, will become a part of the Burger Planet team.

• According to statistics women in their 30’ and 40’s are --- times more likely to adapt a health regimen. This includes cutting out high-calorie foods. Women in this demographic want healthier choices because of decreasing metabolism. According to WebMD.com, women’s metabolism tends to decelerate by about 5 percent per decade after the age of 40.

• Jayne Petersen’s role will not only be to help develop menu options, but also to attract women of that demographic. Petersen is an adviser to Opal Whitcomb and is nationally recognized as a fitness specialist. Petersen has appeared on Whitcomb’s show, Opal Speaks, several times and has published a bestseller on health.

• It is important to keep the traditional Burger Planet menu while adding options that appeal to the health conscious demographic. By creating a more diverse menu women will have a convenient stop that provides healthier choices as well as Burger Planet’s infamous burger and fries.

We believe that by implementing the key point of this campaign Burger Planet will regain the demographic that has begun to diminish. With the return of these customer’s Burger Planet will see an increase in revenue.

A GLOBAL ORGANIZATION IN CACHE VALLEY
Aggies for Africa- Student’s fighting for a Cause

LOGAN, Utah- Aggies for Africa is a club at Utah State University. The club is run entirely by the student members. These local students are working to raise awareness about many of the conflicts currently taking place in Africa. The club is continually working on service projects to better the lives of many Africans from Uganda to Sudan. Club member Ashley Hall says, “Never underestimate you’re ability to make a difference in someone else’s life- no matter how great the distance is, there is always a way to serve.”

The club presidency traveled to Africa in June 2008 to serve and find more ways to influence the African people for good. The club is currently striving to install a micro-loan system in various countries. The micro-loan system will allow many villages to function and grow by relying on their own skills and abilities. The loan will allow local villagers the means to purchase the supplies necessary to practice their crafts for an income that will then allow them to repay the micro-loan and then function thoroughly off of their own profits.

The club meets twice a month on every other Thursday. To become more involved or get more information you may email Jo Olsen at jo.olsen@aggiemail.usu.edu.

Dear Melissa:

How are you and your family doing? I hope that all is going well. Thank you for vocalizing your interest in the public relations field. The following information will answer any questions or curiosities you may have about the opportunities this field presents.

Public relations is the “activity which evaluates public attitudes, identifies the organization’s policies and procedures with the public interest, identifies constituencies or audiences to be reached by the organization’s communications, and establishes channels of communication with these groups of people.”

The opportunities are endless within the public relations field. This is a growing field and there is a big demand for professionals.

Please contact me if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help. I am passionate about this field and would love to help you decide if it is the right thing for you.
