Public relations is the “activity which evaluates public attitudes, identifies the organization’s policies and procedures with the public interest, identifies constituencies or audiences to be reached by the organization’s communications, and establishes channels of communication with these groups of people.”
A public relations professional is used as the mouthpiece between a company or organization and the public. The actual job description will vary with where you choose to work but the main idea is the same, public relations professionals are to communicate and represent things in the best way possible.
The opportunities are endless within the public relations field. This is a growing field and there is a big demand for professionals.

Practice News Story 11: Accident

Tragic Accident Kills Four from Utah State University
TREMONTON, Utah-
A van carrying eleven people from Utah State University, one instructor and 10 students, crashed on Thursday around 4:00 p.m. Four of the passengers are pronounced dead. The van was on route to Tremonton traveling eastbound on Interstate 84. Kyle Holden, from Green Line Implements, was following the van on the field trip. Holden was passing the van in the fast lane when he looked back and saw that the driver’s side rear tire blew out. The driver of the van, Evan Parker, then lost control of the vehicle and drove off of the road then rolled several times. Holden said that Parker did all that he could to keep control of the vehicle by not applying the breaks after the tire blew. Holden said that he had his cruise control set at about 79 mph when he passed the van.
Lieutenant Jason Jensen was the first to arrive at the scene. Jensen said, “Within my 15 years of experience here on the force this is by far the worst accident I have ever seen. It will really have a big effect on the community. With this many involved it really is a tragedy. This is something that will effect people for years.”
Noel Cockett, Dean of the College of Agriculture, said that the time and location for memorial services will be released tomorrow. Utah State University has canceled all of the activities planned for Agriculture Week.

Turner to join the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
LOGAN, Utah-
Ted Turner was seen exiting a private jet with Bill and Melinda Gates on Wednesday. The trio was on their way to meet with an African Mayor, Malik Ok. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has joined its forces with Ted Turner and Warren Buffett. Turner is more actively involved than Buffett. Bill Gates commented on the new addition to his team, “it’s more efficient for him (Ted) to work with us.”
The foundation is working with the World Health Organization to teach African’s basic and complex health information in an effort to put an end to the disease that is so prevalent. This education will range from simple sanitation concepts to knowledge about small pox, measles, and AIDS/HIV. The goal of the foundation is to not only provide the tools and supplies necessary to improve their quality of life but to also give them the education and skills needed to succeed without the constant aid from America. Malik Ok said, “There is a lot of disease everywhere. I like their philosophy of educating and providing the supplies.”
Bill Gates said that they are working where they can do the most good. There will be more details released on their plans at a later press conference.

Ted Turner joins the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
An unusual group is now working together on a philanthropic endeavor together. The usually-solo Ted Turner is now working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, they were spotted getting off a private jet on Wednesday to meet with a local African Mayor, Malik Ok. The foundation is working with the World Health Organization to educate Africans on common sanitary knowledge and advanced medical care to help put an end to measles, small pox, HIV, AIDS, and other prevalent diseases. Malik Ok said, “There is a lot of disease everywhere. I like their philosophy of educating and providing the supplies.”

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

C. J. Miles was back and on fire for the Utah Jazz. Miles scored 30 points, which was his career high. Miles aided in the victory over the San Antonio Spurs to end the night with a win of 106-99.
The Utah Jazz not only had Miles back off of the bench but they also had a great return from Mehmet Okur who has been out with the flu. The Utah Jazz broke a record for scoring 16 3-pointers. Carlos Boozer had 12 rebounds and scored 26 points, which boosted their ability to win. Miles said, “Deron Williams helped me get a lot of good open shots. He can run the plays and get things open for us.”
Jerry Sloan said, “This was a close game right down to the last minute. I am proud of my guys.”

Thursday- Google Inc. released their proposition to make a hostile takeover bid on Time Warner Inc. The financial outline involved in this takeover is $35 billion in cash will be given to the stock holders, $10 billion will be spent directly on stock, and $5 billion will be given to Time Warner to pay for an assumed debt.
This acquisition has been a great venture for Google but on the other hand Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Inc. are quite discontented at the news of this takeover bid. Both Yahoo and Microsoft had hopes of purchasing Time Warner.
Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt said, “ Google strikes while the iron is hot, and the iron is hot right now in the media industry. This is the correct move at the correct time for Google.”

On Nov. 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln met on the battlefield at Gettysburg to dedicate the land to those who so bravely fought for our freedom. Lincoln made this monumental event an opportunity not only to dedicate the grounds of a cemetery, but also to consecrate the living in the struggle to ensure that the "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Lincoln gave the challenge and opportunity for everyone to make a difference, he said, “It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us here to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us… that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.” The crowd went wild after hearing these motivating words. Lincoln spoke with a desire to not only to pay respect and gratitude to those who have died for the cause of freedom but to ensure that we continue to work in that struggle.
