Blaze Destroys Ogden Building
A fire broke out in an Ogden building on the corner of 21st Street and Washington Boulevard around 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The three-story building housed Pedro's Mexican Restaurant and 2 levels for apartments.
There were five people inside when the flames broke loose. Pedro Sanchez was in the kitchen cooking a hamburger for his regular customer, Michael, when a grease fire started. Pedro said, "[The flames] came fast." Pedro yelled for Michael to call the fire department as they were escaping the restaurant. On the second floor was Miguel Sanchez and his two daughters, Maria Del Mar-4, and Mercedes-2. They all escaped safely but the two girls are currently being treated for smoke inhalation at Mckay-Dee Hospital.
Deputy Fire Chief, Greg Chamberlain, was the first on the scene. He said that the building had the appropriate fire codes. Pedro Sanchez, the owner of Pedro's Mexican Restaurant, has been building his business for the past two years. His brother, Miguel Sanchez, is waiting for the legal papers that will allow him to be involved with the business. Pedro said, "We were hoping to grow in the restaurant." Pedro already has plans to rebuild with the help of some friends.
Rachel Calhoun, the owner of the building, did not have any comments at this time.
